This is how we camp…

What a weekend!

While last week’s roasted haunch of goat was incredibly delicious, and very fun to cook, we really outdid ourselves this weekend.  We pulled out our canvas tents, packed up the cars, and set off for VT.  We watched in amazement as the boiling thunderheads rolled to either side of us, and only had to duck under the tent for about thirty seconds of intense hail.

But what did we eat, you ask? A sample dinner: Game hens and rabbit roasted over an open fire, with a spread of ripe fruits, oatcakes, cheesy-meaty-biscuits, and a plethora of drinks.

Between six of us, we also neatly polished off: 1 specialty growler, 3 cases of beer, 13 ciders, 3 bottles of mead, 1 bottle each of plum, raspberry, and peach wines, 2 magnums of regular wine, and 2 bottles of home-made “Skittle Juice”.  And that’s just what we drank in our own camp…

Oh, and there was also fire dancing.  Epic win!

I’ve never been much of a camper, but this works for me.

There is a distinct possibility that we dabble extensively in the SCA. The tent and shields gave us away! :)

For me, it was the alcohol consumption that gave it away. *cough* :D

…what about roasted marshmallows? You camp much more glamorously than I do, I’d probably kill for food like that after a day on the trail!

Done! It was a simple baking powder biscuit recipe, to which we added some grated Cabot bacon-cheddar, and some leftover spicy chicken kebab (precooked). They make for hefty little snacks, and there never seem to be quite enough of them!

Need something other than the wheel-rim fire though.

Well THAT looks like fun! Glad the weather rolled through and left you unscathed! The food looks terrific! I, too, had roasted goat over the weekend … so good, but was trying to describe it to a friend and couldn’t find the right adjective … not not like lamb or chicken or pork or, or, or … a bit sweet a bit herby a bit tangy/peppery … hmm …

The fact that you have made an entire blog based on the food in A Song of Fire and Ice makes me so happy. Kudos!!! One of my favorite things about that series is the descriptions of the meals, they sound absolutely epic!

Chelsea’s tent, in the photos, is from Fall Creek Sutlery, while Sariann’s tent is from Soulpad. They really change the experience of camping, for the better, I think! :)

This is my kind of camping! It looks like a blast, and with so much delicious food! I love your tents also, much cooler than the ratty old plastic thing in my attic.
