Vote! Vote! Cast your votes!

I’ve finished the last character themed meal, which means, of course, that it’s time to start thinking about the next one.

I was going to wait a while longer to post this, but it’s the middle of a week that’s crawling along, and here in Boston it’s grey and rainy. Also, I’m still sad there are no more episodes to watch on Sundays!

Clearly, the only thing for it is a GoT food pick-me-up, in the form of a rabid vote-off to determine our next character themed meal.

The theme of this vote is Movers and Pushers, and the contestants are some of the more subtle, secretive, sly and manipulative secondary characters in the books and show. The voting ends at 12:30 pm on the 20th, so you’ve got a week to make sure your character wins.

Good luck!

Had to pick Shae. She’s sensual but practical which how I imagine her meals. At least the tv show Shae anyway.

I HAD to pick Varys after the ending of Dance with Dragons, now one of my favorite characters. He is never what you expect him to be. Something fragrant and delicate in appearance yet actually very robust – deep and dark and full of surprises!

Picked Asha because I love love LOVE seafood and I would love to see that kind of food diversifying the character themed list.

Agreed. Plus, it would be an interesting challenge. No milk, cream or grain – the Ironborn “do not sow”. Everything would be stuff they hunted, gathered or caught.

Not to mention that we haven’t had any Ironborn meals yet that I can recall. There’s been some Narrow Sea selections from the Sisters and Salladhor, but nothing terribly nautical-based or -inspired.

Yara or Jaqen would involve lots of seafood, even raw. I went with Yara just because we see more of her and she isn’t a complete cipher. Despite the probable paucity of grain, I can imagine some hardtack, and, of course, a lot of ale. Calamari, duh. “suckling babe” pig? What did Vikings eat?

Varys would use both glutony and seduction to acchieve his goals. It would make for a fantastic meal. But I’m still waiting for Tyrion’s… he is a hedonist, isn’t he? He is sophisticated… What an intimate, mesmerizing feast he would create to seduce a woman.

Gods, yes, Tyrion’s meal would be an epic feast.

Gah I can’t pick between Varys and Jaqen! I can see Varys winning this poll by a landslide, so a man might need some help.

Voting Varys for now. Not sure what to make of current leader Jaqen – what does a man eat? Nothing really jumps at me.

That said, would it be cheeky of me if I started a write-in campaign for the next character meal to be Sansa? The wolves are hungry and it’s about time a Stark featured. Plus, I think Sansa’s meal would be the most interesting – blending Northern and Southern styles and cuisine. Plus, lemon cakes and possibly a stack of little honey-fingers creeping in on a little roast bird.

She’s definitely on the short list of Character Themed Meals. I think she eats some of the best food in the books, and it would be lovely to match different dishes with the evolution of her character…

Asha! The Iron Island are less represented than other areas, and seafood is so good!

Could I ask very nicely, for you to return to Asha or Ironmen-themed cooking even if she doesn’t win this? It feels like we’ve had plenty of King’s Landing/Essos dishes, how about some rougher left-field creations?

It was also between Jaqen and Varys for me, but I picked Jaqen because of the challenge–what would (wouldn’t?) a faceless man eat?

His meal should be dark, bloody and complex, with little food that he couldn’t forage himself. A man should not depend on others for sustenance.

I know enough of roasts and stews so Mormont is out. Much as I’d love to see the seafoods piled on Asha’s plate but I’m curious what a eunuch eats, so I vote Varys.

What would Varys eat? Depends on who’s doing the cooking. If it’s Littlefinger, I’d guess bull penis. ;)

Jaqen H’gar will be tricky since being “no one” he can’t have any personal tastes, so it will have to be a cross between the food served in the House of B&W, bread and water (the cuisine of the dark cells) and the grub at Harrenhall.

I voted for Jorah because I think that his food choices would be very yummy (I’m starving at the moment, that probably has something to do with it). But I am VERY glad that Jaqen is (currently) winning. A man must eat.

The meal of a faceless (or face-changing) assassin? Boring. An MRE would be extravagant for such a man. Food is irrelevant – for him only maintaining the cover matters.

Now, Shae, on the other hand: a lowly whore – a camp follower – thrust into greatness (no pun intended), but with a somewhat mysterious background. How much of her backstory is true, and how much was simply invented to make herself sound interesting to Tyrion?

What sort of meal would she enjoy? This girl who was a gutter-slut one morning, and the secret consort of the King’s Hand a week later?

Agreed. And since it’s almost certainly impossible for her to win at this point, I thought I’d toss my thoughts:

Given her trade, I’d imagine aphrodisiacs like oysters and cherries would feature heavily. Also, grapes by the bunch – to be fed to one another.

But if it’s just her, probably no wine since Tyrion kept getting it wrong in that guessing game of his. ;)

    “What does a man eat?”

I could see the Jaqen thing going many ways, like Jaqen’s many faces. I can currently come up with two potential routes. In the literal sense, I suppose his meal could be a vast combination of foods from many worlds (with a heavier emphasis on Bravos, maybe?). OR, his meal could be more representative of who/what he is, sort of along the lines of an experiment in Westerosii gastronomy or deconstruction/reconstruction.
